What to Pack in your Hand Luggage
We are off to our villa shortly and my mind has had to focus on what and where to pack for the holidays.
First priority has to be what to put in hand luggage. Some airlines are getting quite tough on the weight limit of hand luggage we are flying with Virgin and their weight limit is 6 kg per piece of hand luggage. Depending on who checks you in sometimes they consider a lady’s handbag as one piece at other times they allow you to have that in addition to another piece.
We always take the laptop with us and the days of carrying it in its bag have gone as we now take a small trolley on wheels with it in. When my parents go on their own Dad used to take the trolley but in the last year Mom also takes a small one partly because the laptop takes up a lot of the weight allowance but also because she can put in the duty free, newspapers and books. If you travel with Virgin they do a very good pre flight ordering system where you order and pay on line before you go and your goods are delivered to you on the flight.
The girls do not trust their precious GHD hair straighteners to the booked in luggage they always take these in their hand luggage!
We always have a folder within which we keep in separate “poly pockets” all the necessary documents we will need on our travels:
Airport Car Parking documents
Airline tickets
Passports
Travel Insurance
Copy of our Estas – this is not a requirement but we feel safer if we have them
Car Hire Documents – don’t forget your driving licences!
Directions to the Villa – I know it is our villa but we always take them to check the route against our directions in case there are any changes/new signs.
If you need any medication during your journey be sure to include that. I often get a sore throat with the dry air in the cabin so usually include a few throat sweets.
Security officials are very strict on not allowing liquids of more than 100ml in hand luggage they simply confiscate it. My own daughter unwittingly put several new cosmetic items in her hand luggage and had them all taken off her. Also remember not to have any sharp items or lighters in your luggage or on your person. You always see lots of tweezers and lighters discarded as you go through security.
I always buy plenty of newspapers and magazines as the latter in particular can make light reading at the villa during the holidays.
Hand luggage sorted now off to pack the checked in luggage.
