Upgrade to premium class? - YES!
Often when we fly to Florida we try and upgrade our seats to premium class.
Lots of people ask us if it is really worth the extra cost.
Firstly we flew out in May and our flight tickets (booked through Travel Republic) cost approximately £720 for two adults return. Usually an upgrade is around £300 per person for both ways – ouch! that would almost double our flight costs ?
Lots of people I notice risk either trying to upgrade when checking in and potentially being disappointed or even on the plane; I don’t know what price they get offered but crammed in economy class for 9 hours doesn’t feel me with much joy. What I did was call the travel operator about 4 days before we departed and told her I would book two premium upgrades if the price was right! She came back with £230 for BOTH and outward/inward bound! – Bargain! I snapped it up.
From £600 down to £230 has to be a good deal, I was a happy chappy! :-)
Anyway, for your money you get the same crummy food (is it actually food? ) and the same movies.
You get a take off drink of bucks fizz or champagne usually 20 minutes after you have taken off; perhaps it should be called an “early in flight drink”?
It certainly feels less claustrophobic and a bit “nicer” (unhelpful word to use but it’s like splitting the difference between a McDonalds burger and a Ruby Tuesday burger, both are burgers but one is definitely better than the other, I’ll let you work out which is best! )
A curtain separates you from the riff raff economy class (yep, I am a snob! ? ). Your seat is more comfortable, wider and yes more leg room.
I’m sure the air in premium is purer too ? , and I am certain that if there were such a terrible thing as a crash then premium class passengers would survive because they paid more! ? ?
Also perhaps of note; there is usually one toilet at the front just for premium class but also you can use the two toilets behind which are shared between premium and economy (perhaps I should call it standard class? ). This means the ratio of people to toilets is less in premium class; it’s not an important fact but might become an issue when you are busting for a p*ss! ! ?
Too make anyone in standard class feel better though, on our return journey we needed to sleep as jetlag and a 3 hour drive home await us.
Directly behind us is a crying toddler who cries and kicks our seats non stop for 4 hours – and that is no exaggeration!
So it just goes to show you can spend the money and still feel tired, fed up and miserable even in premium class!
