Titusville
If you visit the Space Coast, or the Kennedy Space Center, and have a couple of hours to spare, anyone interested in Space and Astronomy should make a visit to the American Space Museum & Space Walk of Fame, 308 Pine Street, Titusville 32796.
Just across from the Space View Park and US Space Walk of Fame Monuments (from whose car park you can view Space Launches), this museum is a treasure trove for the space enthusiast.
Housed in a residential house, the Museum is full of items donated by NASA, and NASA contractors, Astronauts and individual collectors. Some of the exhibits have actually been into Space!
The Museum is very reasonably priced - $10 for Adults, Seniors (65+) and Military $8, Children 13-18 $5 and younger children free. It has lots of workshops and at least twice per month a free Astronomy Programme. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm except for public holidays.
When we visited, it was very quiet, and one of the docents asked if we would like a free guided tour. He was very knowledgeable and brought a lot of the exhibits to life. We got to sit at the controls that were used at NASA for the Space Program!
We found the Museum fascinating and will certainly go back.
If you are hungry after your Museum visit, or when leaving KSC, swing by Steve’s Diner at 2900 S. Washington Avenue, Titusville 32780. You will find the car park is always full, so parking can be interesting, but it is worth it, (and on launch days, you can view them from the car park). Don’t be fooled by the less than attractive outside (looks like a bit of a dive) or the “interesting” decor inside; this place is a culinary find.
Staff are friendly and welcoming, the menu is extensive and the portions are HUGE! Prices are extremely reasonable. I had Fish and Chips; 11 pieces of white fish (yes 11! ) with a mound of fries! My husband had Gammon and Pineapple which was delicious. Take home boxes are a must.
A chap on the next table to us had Frogs Legs, and a portion of Catfish; 2 enormous fillets of catfish! His Take Home boxes were so full it could have fed him for days!
They are renowned in the state for their Fried Chicken - said to be the best. Follow with a delicious dessert from their tempting array of baked goods and shortcake slices.
We would go to Titusville JUST to go to this Diner - try it!
