Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill
It was our daughter who first introduced us to Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill in Boca Raton. We had flown in to Miami to visit her when she was doing her year as a Manager In Training in Boca Raton, as part of her Surry University degree. We arrived tired and hungry after a transatlantic flight, but luckily there was a Smokey Bones close to her apartment.
We had never heard of Smokey Bones before, but in fact they have over 100 locations across the eastern and Midwestern United States. They even opened their first restaurant in Orlando, Florida in 1999. They are part of the Darden Restaurant group, based in Florida, who also own and operate Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52 casual dining restaurants.
You can’t miss these restaurants – they have their own particular style, based on a rustic mountain lodge. Built of natural stone, and wood, you might think that you were in the mountains rather than in the sunshine state. As you enter you will be struck by the tall timbers and huge open fireplaces. An unusual feature is the use of large screen television screens throughout the restaurant, and each booth has individual controls so you can watch the TV programme you choose, or simply mute the sound altogether. If you are a sports fan you are sure to find something to watch. A mural of the Grand Teton Mountains National Park showing spectacular scenery of snow capped mountains, pine forests and huge sparkling lakes adds to the ambience.
As to the food, well there is a good choice, and new items are added all the time. There are the usual starters which include soup, chicken wings, fried Mozzarella cheese sticks, Beer battered onion rings, chicken fingers and Quesadilla. BBQ Platters include Smoked Beef Briskey, Half a chicken, their award winning BBQ Ribs, as well as Baby Back Ribs and Smoked St Louis Style Ribs. There are steaks galore, including Top Sirloin, NY strip, Kansas City Flat Iron Steak, and Steak and Shrimp combo. Kids are not forgotten either, with a variety of items including the ever popular hamburger as well as macaroni cheese, chicken fingers and chicken breast.
And if you have room try some of their mouth-watering and very fattening bag of donuts, freshly made to order with cinnamon and sugar, or maybe the Chocolate Peanut butter pie – deadly! Chocolate silk pie, chocolate fudge cake apple cobbler a la mode and of course vanilla ice cream complete the selection.
You can even take home some of their sauces, like mustard BBQ or Howling Hot Sauce.
