My favourite place for lunch

The first Mimi’s began in Anaheim in California in 1978 and was named by the owner Arthur J Simms who had fallen in love with a young French girl near the end of world war two. Her name was Mimi. The war did eventually tear them apart but he and his family felt that the name Mimi was a fitting tribute to her and the colourful French touches seen in the restaurant. It is also one of the few restaurants in Orlando that has outside tables for that European feel. As a European I do miss being able to eat out during a sunny a lunchtime.

Mimi’s used to be a well kept secret, but it is now getting more popular as word gets around. The cooking is Louisiana creole style.

After being shown to your table, your server will present you with a menu that will give you a headache deciding which, of the many dishes, to choose. While you are making up your mind, the server will ask you what you would like to drink. Only moments later he/she will return with your chosen drinks plus some delicious breads. One rather unusal one is carrot and raisin plus soda bread and the usual bread rolls.

We were there for lunch and decided a light choice would be Quiche Lorraine and salad. When it came we were amazed. Having already consumed all the bread, we were presented with not only the hot quiche and salad, but a fruit salad and a choice of muffin. We ended up taking the muffins and fruit home with us. Other choices on the lunch menu were a range of soups including split pea, red bean and andouille sausage and corn chowder. Other ideas for lunch are to order the appetiser to share were a jazz fest – chicken tenders, spinach and artichoke dip, zucchini parmesan or black and bleu chicken quesadilla.

Maybe you would just like to try a sandwich, how about albacore and avocado, turkey pesto ciabatta or West Coast reuben.

We enjoyed our lunch so much that we decided we would try Mimi’s for dinner one night. Some dishes go under the name of “comfort classics”, chicken pot pie, pot roast slow braised chuck beef with vegetables and potatoes as well as the usual steaks, ribs, fish, pasta dishes and pork chops.

No visit to Mimi’s is complete without a dessert. Try the bread and butter pudding with plump raisins and whisky sauce – it’s heaven.

Remember though when you receive the bread how much else you will have to get through.
