Hidden Mickey's
How did it all Start?
Rumour has it that Hidden Mickey’s started out when the building of Epcot commenced, at this point Disney Management wanted to keep all the Mickey’s and Minnie’s confined to the Magic Kingdom. (However as we all know, mice are shrewd creatures and can get everywhere, no matter how you try to stop them).
So the Imagineers (designers and builders of Disney attractions) rebelled by sneaking in some “Hidden Mickey’s”. In time Guests and Disney employees began noticing them and this idea grew and grew. Nowadays “Hidden Mickey” spotting as come something of an infatuation and when new attractions open Hidden Mickey’s are somewhat expected.
Hidden Mickey’s can now be found in all Disney theme parks, downtown Disney, some hotels and water parks.
So what do they look like?
Hidden Mickey’s come in all shapes and sizes. The most common is the “Classic Mickey”, 3 interconnecting circles forming Mickey’s Head, one circle for his head and two for each of his round ears. Other Mickey’s show a silhouetted side view of his full body, a detailed picture of his face or body. Sometimes the Hidden Mickey just shows his shoes, ears or handprints.
Mickey is not the only hidden character; others (to name a few) include Minnie, Goofy and Donald Duck.
So where can I find one?
Hidden Mickey’s are plentiful and the best place to try and spot one is in a queue.
Just to give you an idea of what you are searching for, here are a few of places to start.
1. Magic Kingdom. Upon exit from Spacemountain, the second scene whilst on the moving walkway you find a shadow of Winnie the Pooh constantly moving left to right across a large hole in a rock.
2. Epcot. Look to the left hand side of the large loading area in Maelstrom in the Norway Pavilion in Epcot, there you will find a Viking in a ship wearing Mickey ears.
3. Disney Hollywood Studios. In the fountain outside Muppet Vision 3D, you will find Gonzo balancing on a figure which resembles Mr Mouse himself with bulging eyes.
4. Animal Kingdom. If you look at where the beams interconnect, in the rafters of the Wildlife Express Train Station you should be able to make out a few of the classic Hidden Mickey’s.
I still can’t find any? ?
If you still can’t find any Hidden Mickey’s – do not despair – ask a cast member. Nine time out of ten they will be able to point one out to you or at least point you in the right direction.
