My First American Breakfast
On my first ever trip to Florida and indeed the USA, I discovered the concept of buffet dinning, chief amongst this was the buffet breakfast!!! The place where my initiation took place is the one of the many and ever popular, Ponderosa’s.
At the time I think it was a couple of dollars for breakfast and for this you were shown to a table and introduced to the waitress who duly brought you your knife, forks and filled you cup with Coffee, Tea or soft drinks, which ever you had chosen when you paid
Next you were given a pile of clean plates and you set off for the buffet, it was all self service and boy what a choice. Scrambled eggs, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, tomatoes, hash browns the list goes on and on.
It was all the things you do not eat at home because we are told how bad these things are for us, but what the hell we are on holiday so we can have it, it’s only for 2 weeks right!!!
Not only are there the what I would call normal things on a cooked breakfast but there was loads of fresh fruit, and other food what I would only call as a dessert at home in the UK, food such as pancakes and maple syrup plus lots of buns etc.
The Americans certainly can eat differently to us as they mixed the bacon etc. on the same plate as pancakes and syrup, I have to admit it takes a bit of getting used to but its just they way its done over there.
The beverages are refilled almost instantly and its FREE my god we would save a fortune at home if this idea was adopted, after clearing your plate you are welcome to take a clean plate and go back as many times as you want, you can eat what you want my god this is wonderful!!
Of course this can lead to you over eating especially on your first few buffet breakfast but boys is it good!! The Americans really can make a good fry up, the streaky bacon has to be the best it’s just how I like it…..crispy and delicious.
If you don’t like a cooked breakfast you can still have unlimited breakfast cereals, yoghurt and fresh fruit, and the fresh fruit is really FRESH!!! It’s wonderful and if you are looking to keep your costs down if you have kids with a good appetite then I would definitely recommend a buffet breakfast, you can have a good fill and it really sets you up for the day.
