Yalaha Bakery
Yalaha Bakery
A long way to go for bread but it’s worth it.
Over the years we have come to accept the fact that despite the many great meals and food which we enjoy in Florida, we have never found a local bakery to rival the one which we use here in the UK.
Publix bread – good
Panera bread – good
……. but not great. This visit we found one, not only to rival our home bakery but to beat it.
In the small town of Yalaha (along the 27 and turn right at the 19) is the most surprising find; a German Bakery. This very unusual building, with its small café and outdoor courtyard for live music, houses a fabulous bread and cake shop with mouth-watering sights and smells. Although the shop opens at 8 am for locals to collect their bread, we timed our visit to coincide with the café opening hours so that we could try some of their food before deciding what to take all the way back to Kissimmee.
Their lunch menu offers a Sandwich selection prepared with unique real German Cold Cuts, Chicken Salad Sandwich and Tuna and we followed their system which is a little like Subway in that you choose a bread, pick a meat, pick a cheese and then choose a side.
They also have a daily specials board with soups, goulash, schnitzel and other German or European dishes. On Saturdays they serve grilled Bratwurst outside in the courtyard, we intend to try this on a different visit.
While we were eating we had an eye on the counter areas where there was a cornucopia of delicious breads and cakes. Having tasted, we decided to take the wholemeal loaf and pretzel rolls back to the villa. We also took a very naughty but nice selection of cakes to have with a cup of tea when we got back home.
It was very busy during our visit and clearly not as remote as we had thought. There was a steady stream of customers and the bakery is clearly well known in the area.
We had only one downside to our discovery and that was the fact that it was such a long way to go if we just wanted a loaf. The following Sunday however we were at the Farmers Market in Celebration when we noticed that Yalaha had a stall there. The lady gave us her card and said that we could just call ahead and she would bring our order with her on a Sunday and we could collect it in Celebration. Hurray
I do however think that we will make the drive in future to try one of their outdoor music nights when we are there in summer.
