Whats the Disney Effect?
What makes Disney so different?
There are so many reasons why Disney World is different to every other organisation, but to my mind it is their attention to detail that makes the difference. In all their films just look at the detail in every aspect, even in the cartoons they always have a sense of reality about them. Who else could have made the Lion King work on film as a cartoon and then as moving characters in the theatre on stage. The ingenuity of the way they made the animals move about was fantastic.
In the theme parks that strong attention to detail is evident every where you look. In most English or other country’s theme park rides, the attendants who usher people through the queues and keep a close eye on things, are dressed in a uniform of some kind, but in Disney World the attendants are dressed as the characters the ride represents. For example at the Pirates of the Caribbean, she attendants are all pirates and in the Haunted Mansion, which is set in the Victorian era, the attendants are all dressed in Victorian costumes and made up to look “dead” with their white make-up and dark ringed eyes. In the cafes and restaurants the staff serving, are dressed in the costume of the area of the park they are working in; for example in Fantasy Land Pinocchio’s restaurant staff are all dressed in Austrian costume.
In Epcot, in the World Showcase, all the staff they employ to work in each “country” are nationals of that country and to add extra authenticity they are dressed in national dress.
Even the people who sweep the streets or empty the trash bins are dressed in costume. Naturally every where is kept scrupulously clean as heaven forbid any litter should be allowed to settle on the ground. To be able to walk through streets all day that have no litter is an absolute joy.
Looking at some of the goods for sale in the shops, I spotted a Disney World ruck-sack which had an embroidered depiction of all the Disney characters on it. On further inspection I noticed that instead of a normal zip, the pull-up part of the zip was the Mickey Mouse ears symbol. In the specialist kitchen shop, the cookie cutters are Mickey Mouse ears shaped as are the ice cube holders. All the utensils they sell have handles shaped like Mickey Mouse and serving dishes are the same shape as well.
So when I am feeling home-sick for Disney, I take out my tea pot with Mickey Mouse feet on it, stand it on my Mickey Mouse ears shaped trivet and pour a cup of tea into my Mickey Mouse mug and enjoy one of my Mickey Mouse ear shaped cookies.
Bliss!
