Suwanee River State PARK
Suwannee River State Park is situated on the U. S. 90 about 13 miles west of Live Oak.
The Suwanee River runs from Texas to the Gulf Coast of Florida and eventually tips out near White Springs.
Back in the day this river was full of paddle boat steamers which carried their cargos. The Confedate army built an earthen embankment as protection against the Union troops. This was to protect the railway which spanned the river. The railway was crucial to the Condederates to carry supplies to Georgia.
The Unionists were keen to capture this bridge but were foiled by that bloody skirmish known as the Battle of Olusia.
The Governor lived in a hndsome house near the rivers junction; he owned the saw mill and became Governor in 1876.
Where the Suwanee and the Withlacoochee meet is a bluff that overlloks this point and affords splendid views. This is about a quarter of a mile from the rangre station.
Here is also one of the oldest cemeteries in Florida. Take the Sand hills trail to access this.
Oh, the trails! They vary here from a wimpy one quarter of a mile to an impossible sounding 18 miles. You are frequently treated to panoramic views of the river from these trails.
The Old Stage Road is included in one of the trails; this runs from Pensacola to Jacksonville.
There is a monthly Bird Walk held her. Right now it is on the first saturday of the months of september, october and then march and april. This is a must for bird spotters and will be led by an expert. The walk starts at 8. a. m and leaves from the car park by the picnic area.
You may not swim here but you can still get on the water (if not in it) by renting a canoe.
If it appeals to you to have a night away then you can rent a cabin for $90 plus tax. Entrance is by the honour system and is $4 for a car and up to 8 people. The honour system means that you are trusted to put the monies into the receptacle provided.
Near by parks include Madison Blue Springs State Park, Lafayette Blue Springs State Park and Peacock Springs State Park.
