FORT CLINCH

Fort Clich State Park is situated on Atlantic Avenue. Fernandina Beach on Floridas north east (Atlantic)coast.

Way back in 1861, it was home to the confederate army but in 1862 the federal troops siezed it on the orders of Robert E Lee. After the civil war it was gradually wound down (except for a spell during the American/Spanish conflict)

As early as 1935, this area was bought by the state and over the years more acreage has been added. The consevation corps has developed this area in to the delightful area that we can see today.

It is viewed as one of the best preserved forts there is and this is due to all the care and attention that this organisation has poured into it.

Once you have looked over the fort, you will probably want to walk the nature trails and there are 6 miles of them. Two of them loop round the pond and they are good for spotting some wild life. Neither take longer than an hour so not too taxing unless it is very hot. Another starts at the car park, goes out for 3 miles and then loops back to the fort.

If you walk along Cumberlad Sound Beaches, you can sometimes spot wild horses on the sands and Amelia light house is visible from some areas of the park.

Amelia River (by Cumberland sound) is where fisher men will be heading. There are several short jetties here or head for the half mile pier.

There is a whole programme of events here at Fort Clinch, so you may want to check that out. They range from candle lit tours, to confederate garrison historical meetings to fishing clinics.

Spring and summer months are best for bird watchers; oyster catchers, sanderling, plovers and terns are all here. A good place to take your binoculars is the Great Birding Trail Pavilion where you will best view warblers, parulas and more.

There is a special dedicated pic nic area set in maritime hammock among the dunes and oak trees. There are some tables and even barbecues if you have come more organised than a ham sandwich!

The playground is good for the children with some climbing frames along side the more normal slides and swings.

The admission cost is only $5 for a car full and the park is open 8. a. m. to sundown every day of the year
