Staying safe in the sun
Most people choose Florida as their holiday of choice because of the wonderful sunshine that you are almost certainly going to enjoy. It is after all, called the Sunshine State! But all that sunshine can turn a wonderful holiday into a nightmare if you are not careful and follow some simple guidelines about how to stay safe in the sun and enjoy the heat.
Sun cream is a must and there are lots to choose from. If you are going to be going in and out of the water then choose a water proof formula. They work well if you are prone to getting a little bit sweaty as well! Never choose a protection factor of less than 15. The higher the factor, the more protection you will get and the longer you will be able to stay out in the sun before burning. You will still tan by wearing a very high factor cream. Please don’t think you will not tan unless you expose your skin. Children are a good example of this. Often, children’s sun cream offers total protection at factor 50+ yet their skin still tans. It is the body’s natural protection.
Apply your sun cream at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun. This gives it chance to sink into the skin and protect the deeper layers. Use plenty and re-apply often. Guidelines state about an egg cup full, every 2-3 hours.
Above all –don’t expose yourself for too long. The sun cream may prevent your skin burning, but does not afford real protection against the more damaging UVA rays. Together with sun cream wear clothes that will protect you in the sun - sunglasses, clothing of tightly woven fabric and a sun hat covering the neck, ears and back of the neck. Get used to the heat and the sun gradually – don’t rush out and stay in the sun for hours on your first day!
As well as preventing sun burn, watch out that you don’t get too hot, or allow too much sun to shine on your head or neck. You could get sun stroke, even when you are feeling cool in the sea or swimming pool if you do not protect your head with a hat or bandana.
Ensure you all stay well hydrated by drinking lots and lots of water and juice – go easy on the alcohol. A bit of care and respect for the dangers of the sun, will ensure that you and your family enjoy every gorgeous ray without allowing it to spoil your dream holiday. Have fun and remember-
