ST ANDREW STATE PARK

St Andrews State Park is located in Panama City, 3 miles east of the highway 392. This is one of the older State Parks having been run by them for more than 50 years. It has a previous history of being used by the military.

There are now more than 1200 acres for you to enjoy whether it be swimming, fishing, walking, boating or just relaxing.

St Andrews is a peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico and the Grand Lagoon. Sea oats cover the white sandy dunes that are divided by flat woods and marsh. If you go inland then look out for the rosemary and srub pine; these and other hardy plants form an important natural defence against erosion. The weather conditions in sub tropical Florida is very hard on the coastal areas.

There are two and a half miles of beach to enjoy whether you want to stroll down them, go shelling or just sun bathe. And of course you must have a cooling swim in the waters that look almost emerald in colour. Do take a high factor sun screen with you since the sun can be very strong. The white sands mean sun glasses are necessary as well

Shuttle boats run tours to Shell Island during the spring and summer months. This is one of the many barrier islands in Florida and well worth the detour.

A good way to explore this park is by canoe or kayak and these can be hired from the park shop. You will find this store near the boat ramp.

Anglers can either surf fish or deep sea. There is a jetty and 2 piers provided for this. You may catch flounder, sea trout, cobia or Spanish mackerel among others that are too many to mention. You will need a fishing licence.

As always, this park has provided some good nature trails and there are 2 here to choose from. Either one will lead you through coastal plant communities.

The shop here supplies food and drink along with bait and tackle. As aforementioned this is where you hire your canoe or kayak.

Admission cost is $2 per vehicle and under is contact details for the park
