St Sebastion River Preserve
St Sebastion River Preserve State Park is situated in Fellsmore on Floridas C. R. 507. Since 1995 the Parks department has been adding more acreage to the site until as we speak it encompasses some 22000 acres (or 35 square miles)
The original quest was to look after the water shed at the Indian River Lagoon and St Sebastion River. However, as it has grown it is preserving the many rare plants and endangered animals of the area.
At one time, the long leaf pine covered much of Florida; this is now somewhere you can go to see what Florida once looked like. Other natural communities here include a starnd swamp. sand hill and cypress domes.
There are 60 miles of trails here; however, many are not suitable for walking and also some are more suited to the experienced hiker. The north east trails are where you may see a red cockaded wood pecker and the south west side play host to the Florida scrub jays.
Loo facilities are limited to a pot=a=loo that is handicapped accesible. There are 2 picnic pavilions which can be found on the south west side of the park.
If you are a fisherman then bring your tackle since there are numerous opportunities to cast your line into a lake, pond or the river. You will find both fresh and salt water fish co=existing in the St Sebastion River with its brackish waters. You may nab a mullet, snook, tarpon or, you would never guess, our old friend, the bass!
If your visit is anytime between november and march then you are in for a treat for this is when the manatees arrive to spend the cooler months. Head for Buffer Preserve Drive (the eastern side) which is in Brevard County) Here in the canal you will see the manatees and also maybe an alligator or two.
This park plays host to an array of wildlife including coyote, bob cat and deer. Visit the website for a list of birds but you may spot a Florida scrub jay, red cockaded woodpecker or American kestrel. In the migration season the bird population is swelled by birds such as hummingbirds, swallow tail kites and robins.
The rangers run a programme of events that happen through the year (evcept dduring the summer months) These include scrub jay encounters, wagon rides and guided hikes. Call ahead of time on 772 589 5050
