Space coast
If you are looking for a great day out why not take a visit to the Kennedy space Centre. The area which is now known as the ‘SPACE COAST’ lies on the east coat of Florida, around 1 hour from Orlando. Driving there could not be easier with most of the roads leading straight there.
Obviously the main attractions is a space shuttle launch itself, but even when you are unlucky to be in Florida at the same time as one of these, there is still plenty to see and do. Another main attraction is the Kennedy space centre. Here you can see original space rockets and an old space shuttle.
While we visited the Kennedy space centre we managed to book onto the very popular tour of the area. This is well worth the money and takes you all around the area, looking at the various launch pads and shuttle hangers. On the day we visited we were lucky enough to glimpse the shuttle on route to the launch pan. This tour is a must as you can’t drive around the area in your car.
One of my favourite parts of visiting the Kennedy space centre was most definitely the walk around the space ‘graveyard’ of rockets. Here you will find al of the old rockets used by the US in their race to place a man on the moon. The main one being the Saturn five rocket. You can really get into perspective the size and magnitude of some of them. Make sure when you do visit you get plenty of happy snaps. There is even a large piece of moon rock on display!
In the visitors centre there is plenty to keep everyone busy for hours and kids really do get made to feel at home with plenty to do and learn about space flight. They can even get up close and personal with a real space astronaught!
We were lucky enough to see a space shuttle launch a few years ago. These can be very busy and it is always best to leave as early in the morning to get there before the crowds arrive. We ended up seeing it on the freeway around 10 miles from the launch site. This still was a fantastic site and well worth it.
Overall the Kennedy space Centre is a great day out for the whole family, There is plenty to do for all ages and there is something for everyone to learn along the way. I would definitely rate this as a must trip to do on your vacation or trip to Florida.
