Riding the Wave in Orlando – Yes! Surfing!
Ever wondered what it felt like to surf but never had the courage to try it? Or perhaps you haven’t wanted to compete with the athletic surfers usually showing off their amazing skills…or perhaps you’ve not been to a beach with waves tall enough to be able to ride on top of a wave. Or are you are always looking for new experiences on vacation? Something to retell to the folks back home?
Well, you can do this in Orlando! Yes that’s right, in Orlando, a vacationers’ paradise but not a destination you would regularly associate with oceans and waves! ! And who provides this? Disney!
So if you have always hankered to take surf lessons Disney offers these at their Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, opposite Downtown Disney. Surfers need to be eight or over (and I would recommend they are a strong swimmer) with the lessons offered in fun, safe surroundings. Typhoon Lagoon Water Park has the most amazing wave machine, creating enormous waves – in fact it could be the world’s largest outdoor wave pool. Rising, roaring waves, up to six feet high, rolling in with great power to the artificial shoreline.
The lessons are held before the park opens up for visitors on selected days. Qualified trainers teach from their base within Typhoon Lagoon at ‘Craig Carroll’s Cocoa Beach Surf School’. Skills can be improved as well as available for beginners during a two and a half hour session. Waves move in every 90 seconds (perhaps more reliable than those offered on natural beaches! ). A maximum of twelve surfers can attend at one time with two professionally qualified instructors per class. Half an hour is spent with instruction given on ‘dry’ land whilst the outstanding two hours are in the wave pool. Soft sided surfboards are used for these lessons. Spectators are welcomed – bring a long cameras and camcorders for a great memory of this experience! Not everyone enjoys riding the wave themselves but are happy to see family and friends enjoying the experience!
So if you thought you would never try the thrill, this is possible – even in mid Florida an hour from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico Sea! Go enjoy!
