Ride Guide – Splash Mountain
Take a trip with Brer Rabbit and friends on this log flume ride. For anyone familiar with the Brer Rabbit tales, this ride is an absolute must and for everyone else, it still is as well! The setting in Frontier Land is absolutely perfect for this classic Disney ride and one of the three mountains in the Magic Kingdom.
Passengers sit two by two, eight to a log in the mainly quite gentle ride. The ride has outdoor and indoor areas and to begin with you head outside and go through a series of ascents and winding canals. The views at this section of the ride are fantastic and you can look out over Frontier Land and the rest of the park. You also get a view of the main feature of the ride – the large drop and will probably see another log coming down it as you pass.
Right from outside the music and story of the ride starts to unfold as you move around the ride and after a few gentle twists and turns you enter a cavern and the first drop! This is starts to whet the appetite for what is to come and takes the ride inside. Here the Brer Rabbit tales really come alive with bright and colourful animatronics on either side of the ride and the ever present soundtrack synchronised with your position as you move along.
It’s all very gentle and cheerful until the next drop inside. Although this drop and the next one are both quite small, as they are dark it can be quite surprising how intense they can be. Don’t worry, though, you are floating through your happy place . . . what can possibly go wrong? Well perhaps the vultures warning you, “We’ll show you your laughing place” and “Time to be turning around” should give you a hint! They wait you at the foot of a large climb and this can only lead to one place – a drop of over fifty feet and at forty five degrees – you are heading for your briar patch!
If you are going to get wet on this ride, this is one of two places that it will happen! As you reach the top of the climb, you have a moment to take in the view across the Magic Kingdom and then down you go! Great fun! You then go around some more turns in the river and under a couple of bridges, great for friends and family watching out for you. There is one more final drop to come and the logs on the ride can often begin to bunch up before and after this as you are getting closer to the exit. At this point there is a waterfall to the right of the ride and often this can also soak the unwary passenger.
We really enjoy this ride in Disney as it is one of the longer rides and it is quite a gentle, meandering ride (apart from the obvious drops! ).
