Lakeridge Winery (6)
Most visitors to Orlando come for the various theme parks – Mickey Mouse has been the major tourist attraction for many years.
However – if you want to get away from the crowds and take a break from the standard attractions and theme parks – why not pay a visit to the Lakeridge Winery, which is situated on the Highway 27, just north of Clermont.
As you drive towards Clermont you will notice the landscape start to change from the flat and uninteresting terrain of the Orlando area. The Lakeridge Winery is to be found on a rolling hillside, just outside the town of Clermont, and consists of several acres of vineyards. Pull of the highway into the ample parking lot and make your way to the main building.
You can first of all browse the shop which sells many wine and kitchen related memorabilia as well as the various wines that are produced there at the winery. You can buy single bottles, by the case or even mix a case if you wish.
Throughout the day there are tours at regular intervals. The first stage is the short film giving the history of the winery, which is still owned and run by the same family. The owners are still very much involved in the day to day wine production. Then on to the tour of the production area, which is fascinating! Wine is still produced there in a very personal way – no automation! The guide talks you through the production process – and then it’s on to the wine tasting. Here you can sample all of the wines that are produced on site – red, blush, white and even their own brand of champagne. There is always an expert on hand to offer advice and guidance.
On certain weekends during the year the Lakeridge Winery holds a festival of live music. For a couple of dollars entrance fee you can spend all day in the outdoor area alongside the winery where there are assorted refreshments for sale, including hot meals, and also of course various wines. The music is themed – could be blues, jazz, folk – but whatever will be a very pleasant way of spending a few hours. Bring your own garden chair as seating is limited.
If you want to get away form the crowds and tourists, or just want to use up a few hours, then the Lakeridge Winery is well worth a visit.
