Kissimmee Old Town – Thrill Rides
It’s difficult to recall the number of times we must have driven down the 192 from the airport and passed the huge metal frame of, what we now know to be, the Skycoaster at Kissimmee Old Town…. . and every time we promise ourselves that we will investigate further during the course of our holiday.
Then what happens…we get consumed with lots of other things to do, trips to Disney, Sea World and Universal Studios, to name just a few. Two weeks go by, and as we are driving back to the airport we once again pass the outskirts of Kissimmee and lament on how quickly the time has gone by and promise that on our next trip we will definitely make time to visit.
Well, that was one promise that we did manage to keep on our last trip and we were pleasantly surprised at what was on offer in Kissimmee, particularly in the Old Town area on a Saturday evening.
In this article we are going to concentrate on the white knuckle rides but, rest assured, if fairgrounds aren’t your thing, there are several other attractions to take your interest and we will attempt to cover them in a separate article.
So, if you are looking for thrills and spills, check out one of the adrenaline pumping rides on offer. The Super Shot, slowly climbs to 150 feet before dropping incredibly quickly in an exhilarating plunge that leaves your heart in your mouth whereas the Old Town Slingshot is attached to elasticated bungee ropes that catapults its occupants 300 feet into the air.
Then of course there is the Skycoaster itself where visitors are attached to a load bearing steel cable before being cranked up nearly 300 feet to the top of the tower. This is not for the faint-hearted and certainly a ride that we decided to leave to the more intrepid adventurers around us. We watched as the ground crew gave the 3-2-1 countdown, the release mechanism was deployed and the human payload hurtled earthward at a great rate of knots.
Just feet from the ground their fall was halted by the cable and they swing back and forth, howling in absolute delight…. or is it sheer terror!
To recover, there are by comparison, slightly more gentle pursuits. Try the Windstorm Roller Coaster with its 90-degree banking or enjoy the views over
Central Florida from the Century Ferris Wheel.
Kissimmee Old Town also has some great shops, restaurants, kiddie areas not to mention a fantastic car parade to tell you about…. so stay close and keep reading!
