Real Soul Food
Places to eat in Florida, the Orlando area especially , do vary dramatically, which is just another reason to love the place!! But, one place I did choose to eat in on one of our trips was, The House of Blues at Downtown Disney. The reason we came to treat ourselves on this occasion to something a little different, was simply that I saw a sign advertising a “Gospel Brunch” at the House of Blues and happened to pass comment that I had always wanted gospel singers at my wedding! (It didn’t happen I might add), and my family said, “Well lets have a gospel brunch instead!” On checking the details, we found that what it actually was, was an all-you-can-eat, Southern-style buffet, but accompanied, of course, by live gospel performances!!
Well, if you love to eat, and enjoy listening to music, you will certainly have a great time, but be prepared to play a very active role in proceedings!
I knew my family we’re not particularly looking forward to the whole event (they like simple, plain food for starters!), and I think they thought that listening to gospel meant that there would be serious religious overtones, but once we had settled in for our 90 minute brunch, chose the things they were happy to eat off the menu, plenty of choice, just your average brunch fare in fact, ranging from scrambled eggs, bacon, grits and home fries, to roast beef, shrimp jambalaya, bbq chicken and ribs, also, there were made-to-order omelets which were a very generous size, and the bread pudding with vanilla sauce was absolutely Yum, they were soon getting into the “Spirit of things” but not as much as I was!!
Plenty of food, and righteous clapping went on, though the main issue, I have to confess, was that it was kind of difficult to eat and clap at the same time!!
Top tip to help here would be try not to sit on the seating in the area by the stage, it is at long communal tables and on hard, narrow wooden folding chairs. There wasn't much room to move while you were attempting to eat, and once the show began, with peeps getting up and sitting down for food, it was fairly awkward. Seating around the sides of the restaurant and up in the balcony were at tables or booths, although we saw some people sitting at the bar on high stools.
By the last song, when one of the singers went looking for people to go on stage, he easily rounded up an enthusiastic 50 plus, of all ages. There was almost hiding under the table from my family at this point!! Neither of my two have ever wanted to be “The Chosen one”. The group finished up shortly before noon, and the place cleared out fairly quickly, majority of guests with smiles on their faces. But not on my husbands I’m afraid. I think overall he likes to be left alone to eat, and there was a little too much going on at the same time as food for him!!
Would I go again? Possibly not, well, maybe if I wasn’t taking my family! But it was worth going at least once. I think so anyway!!
