Healthy Eating in Orlando
During our last visit to Orlando in September 2008 I was determined not to gain the usual 5 pounds in weight so I decided to find healthy alternatives to my usual chicken sandwich and fries delicious though they may be.
Our first meal was at Applebee’s as it is close to our villa just off the US 27. I was delighted to find a dedicated weight watchers menu with a varied selection all quoting calories and fat content. I opted for the Cajun Lime Tilapia served with Broccoli, which was delicious and very filling.
We also tried Chillis Bar and Grill at Championsgate which again had a dedicated menu called Guiltless Grills offering Salmon, Black Bean Burger, chicken platter and chicken sandwich. I opted for the salmon, which was very tasty, but next time I think I will try the chicken sandwich which I noticed flying by on the way to another table.
TGI Fridays also has a selection of healthy alternatives which typically have 10g of fat and less than 500 calories. We tried the Dragon Fire Chicken with Chinese Kung Po sauce served on a bed of brown rice with vegetables and exotic fruit. This dish was very well thought out and very tasty I would definitely have it again.
The Cheesecake factory offers 3 different Weight Management salads and at least one healthy option for a main course, I tried a chicken dish with a delicious tomato based sauce with Pasta and vegetables topped with Parmesan shavings. There isn’t the variety of healthy choices that other restaurants offer but the meal I chose was delicious although the temptation of those wonderful looking cheesecakes could rather quickly undo all your good work.
My favourites restaurant of all was Seasons 52. The talented chefs use only seasonal produce to produce a varied and stylish menu with every item containing less than 475 calories. The setting is very stylish and contemporary with a beautiful piano bar as well as the main restaurant. It is a little more expensive than the others restaurants I have reviewed but well worth it for an adult night out without the children. We both had the Chicken curry soup to start, which was delicious and very filling, followed by the Cedar Plank Atlantic Salmon, and finally to finish off the meal a “mini indulgence” of Key Lime Pie served in a shot glass. We couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough the food was delicious and the surroundings beautiful, a perfect night out and an excuse to get out that little black dress and high heels! !
