Golf on the US27
The past few years has seen significant development on the US27. Initially resorts were being opened on what seemed a daily basis and it has to be said the infrastructure could not keep pace. Several years on and shops and restaurants have and still are being built making the area a wonderful place for your vacation.
Despite all the development it would be fair to say that the majority of golfers will still play the old favourite courses, which although still cheaper than the equivalents in the UK, are still relatively expensive, at times difficult to book and in some cases not easy to find. There are however within 15 minutes of the intersection with the US192 three courses that offer different tests and are suitable for beginners up to the very lowest handicaps.
Polo Park East and WestThese two nine hole courses are located half a mile south of the intersection with the US192 with one either side of the US27. The courses are set within a retired residential community and are run by them. As with most nine hole courses the test is not that difficult and is more suited to those newer to the sport, or those who can no longer complete 18 holes. Having said that if you have an hour or two to spare whilst waiting for the family to get ready for another Disney adventure, why not start the day with a quick nine holes. The cost is very reasonable $15 to $20 for nine holes including a buggy, and clubs can be hired. It is not normally necessary to book although the residents do have the tee for a short time twice a week.
Kings RidgeKings Ridge is situated approximately 10-15 minutes north of the intersection with the US192 on the right hand side. As well as the original 18 hole course there is now a new 18 hole par three course. The original course is suitable for most handicappers and is ideal if you want a decent test of golf. The course has a good size practice area and excellent refreshment facilities. The cost is very reasonable at around $35 - $40 per round, again with a buggy included, and as with Polo Park clubs can be hired. It is recommended that you pre book your golf as tee times are alternated with members during the morning. You can book over the phone which saves you travelling to the course, although if you are staying at one of the many resorts on the US27 it is a short drive and for $5 you can get a bucket of balls to hit to get rid of the stiffness in your swing.
The LegendsThe Legends is virtually opposite Kings Ridge and is undoubtedly the toughest test of the courses reviewed. It is certainly not for the beginner and with a number of water holes and a yardage of 6911 yards is a stiff test of golf. There are also excellent views and is a must for serious golfers staying in the area. The cost three years ago was around $65 including buggy, however this may well have changed. As with Kings Ridge the course has excellent practice areas and it is recommended that you book in advance. One final thing is the restaurant which overlooks the course. Although I have not been there myself I have heard it is excellent and well worth a visit.
I hope you find this insight into these easily accessible courses on the US27 useful and that you take the time to visit them if you are staying locally.
