Getting Married on a Cruise Ship
It is becoming more and more fashionable to get married in exotic places, and one venue which is increasingly popular is that of a cruise ship. Combining the wedding and the honeymoon is now seen as a viable option.
There are two choices – either to get married on board ship, or during a visit to one of the spectacular Caribbean islands on the itinerary. Princess, Celebrity and Azamara all perform weddings at sea. However, not all cruise ships can perform the ceremony at sea, in International waters – some, like Royal Caribbean, must perform the ceremony in port.
Imagine the romance of being married aboard a luxury liner by the ship’s captain. With your own personal Wedding Co-ordinator, every possible aspect will be taken care of. The ceremony can be as simple, or as elaborate as you wish, and some ships even have a dedicated Wedding Chapel, such as on Grand Princess.
Having had a daughter who, as an officer on board several P and O ships, was a wedding co-ordinator, I know that such weddings were organised with skill, leaving the bride and groom to enjoy a totally stress free day. Everything necessary can be organised on board – from flowers to music, from the cake to photographs, from the make up to the hair style. And of course, the reception can either be a very low key affair in the dining room, an intimate romantic dinner in a speciality restaurant, or a full scale reception in a special room.
My husband and I decided to renew our wedding vows on board Grand Princess to celebrate our 30 wedding anniversary. With our children and special friends on board it was certainly an occasion to remember. Everything was organised for us, and the day went like clockwork. With a beautiful bouquet, corsages for the ladies, and a wonderful cake it made our special celebration utterly unforgettable.
One of the added bonuses of getting married on board ship is that you are made to feel so special. As you walk round the ship in your bridal finery everyone will want to wish you well, and you certainly feel like a princess for a day. What could be more romantic than walking along the deck in your wedding dress, your groom in his smart suit beside you, and a background of a stunning sunset over a blue ocean?
If you are looking for a very different experience, and one which will be remembered forever, then getting married on a cruise ship certainly fits the bill.
