Cruising – New Ships for 2011
Many people now combine a couple of weeks of hectic excitement at Disneyworld, Orlando, Florida, with a more relaxed week on a cruise ship to the Caribbean – and there will be plenty of new ships to choose from.
Like many other years, 2011 will see the inaugural sailings of many new large cruise ships.
One of the most popular will undoubtedly be the Disney Dream which set off on her first cruise on January 26th, 2011. She is much bigger than her two sister ships, Magic and Wonder, and can accommodate 4, 000 passengers. She is almost 40% larger than the first ships in the fleet. As one would expect of Disney, there are plenty of family friendly amenities on board, including the Aquaduck, a combination waterslide and roller coaster. There is a miniature golf course, a basketball and volleyball court and virtual sports simulators. Adults are not forgotten as there is an adults only pool called Quiet Cove, and 11 cafes, nightclubs and bars. But one of the most innovative features will be the inside cabins which will have a porthole –shaped monitor on the wall which will receive pictures from cameras mounted on the outside of the ship. This will simulate an outside view, and is a very inventive and novel feature.
Carnival, too, are unveiling the largest ship in its fleet at 130, 00 tons. With a capacity of 3690 passengers, Magic will feature deluxe oceanview staterooms with two bathrooms, plus staterooms with a spa. There will be elite amenities and spa priveledges for those who book a suite. Its WaterWorks aqua park will be a great new feature, and the Cloud 9 spa is enormous. For those who like to relax in a hotub there will be those that extend out over the ship’s side.
In July 2011, Celebrity Silhouette makes her debut with 85% of staterooms having balconies. As well as this there will be flat screen televisions and wireless internet access. As with the other Solstice class ships, Silhouette will feature the amazing Hot Glass Show, and Theatre productions with the all new Cirque du Soleil shows.
Royal Caribbean, always at the forefront of innovation, launched their latest mega-liner at the end of 2010, when Allure of the Seas, sister to Oasis of the Seas, made her maiden voyage. With 5, 400 passengers, she offers amazing facilities for young people, including the Adventure Ocean Theater and Science Lab and areas for teenagers and babies. There is even a full size carousel on board this fabulous ship. The two storey Loft Suites have bathrooms on each floor and floor-to-ceiling windows. Adults are not forgotten, either, as there is an adults-only solarium, casino and nightclubs, and a huge spa and a state of the art fitness centre.
