Farmers Market: Dearbourn Street Englewood

Farmer’s Market on Dearborn Street Englewood Gulf Coast.

One of the largest Farmer’s market is held on Thursdays 9am -1pm from October through end of May on Dearborne Street, Olde Englewood.

Here you can buy the freshest of fruit and veg mainly grown by small independent local growers. Not only is the produce fresh but you will also make considerable savings on supermarket prices. You can also buy smaller quantities than the usual supermarket packaged goods.

What can you buy?

•Citrus fruit stalls have: Florida oranges, grapefruit, lemons, lime which you can sample before you buy
•There is a wide range of fruits, salad & local veg
•Bread & cake stalls
•Honey & jams
•Coffee
•Home made pickles & salad dressings
•Beef jerky (yuck! )
•Pop corn
•German sausage
•Freshly made paella
•Plants, shrubs & flowers including beautiful orchids
•Soaps & body creams
•Herbal medicines
•Art & crafts goods
•Table cloths & hand made linen goods
•T shirts

Local newspaper & Chamber of Commerce also host information stalls. There is usually a local singer to entertain and add to the atmosphere. On the right hand side of the road are lots of Hippie type stalls so expect to see moons & stars, long hair and kaftan type clothing ? plus lots of unusual arts & crafts which make great presents.

You will see cooking demonstrations and you can sample to goodies and take away a recipe or two. Here is my favourite which I observed, sampled and tried to replicate?

GARDEN PESTO: soak 1 cup pumpkin seeds, walnuts, pecans or other shelled nuts until soft. Drain. Put in food processor. Blend with 2-3 garlic cloves, about 1/2 cup olive oil and as much fresh green herbs as you have: any combo mints, cilantro, basil, parsley, chives, tarragon, arugala, spinach, beet greens, dandelion . . . Add avocado, asagio or parmesan cheese and lemon zest or juice to taste and blend until smooth and creamy. Serve on fish, fowl, veg. Can be formed into balls and frozen for future use.

The market is held half way down Dearborn Street on both sides of the road. Although there are plenty of places to park the closest spaces go first so be prepared to walk a few minutes. Take plenty of cash with you as not many of the vendors are geared up for cards. Also take plenty of the supermarket plastic bags as again many of the vendors do not provide this.

If you are looking for somewhere to have lunch then mango Bistro is an excellent choice. It can be found at 301 W Dearborn St, Englewood, FL 34223. Phone ahead to reserve a table as it is very popular but very good. 941 681 3500

If you fancy exploring further down Dearborne Street you will find antique stores, gift shops, craft shops, an icecream parlour and a couple of café/bars.

If you are in the Englewood area June through October and want fresh farmer produce at good prices then try Sunfresh Produce 3037 South McCall Rd (next to Walmart).
