LAKE JUNE IN WINTER SCRUB STATE PARK.
Lake June In Winter Scrub State Park is situated Sebring about 15 minutes from downtownn in Lake Placid. It is part of the Lake Wales Ridge whose tall sandy ridges are as a result of having been covered with sea many years ago. This created a string of sandy islands.
This has created the rare eco system that plays host to a variety of rare flora and fauna.
Lake June was so named by Dr Melvil Dewey who invented the library cataloging system that bears his name (so simple and effective) In the late nineteenth century, he had built a resort at Lake Placid New York for the use and enjoyment of his friends. Some thirty years later, he came across what was then called Lake Steams. He thought it would be a good location fot winter getaways and duly built a resort there as well.
He had the name changed to Lake Placid and also had the town re named Lake June in Winter. It was Dewey who persuaded the railways to open a railway here and he also had another hotel constructed.
Before it became a State Park in the nineties, the land was owned by Consolidated Tomika; they were engaged in the turps industry and also grazed cattle on the land.
This park is a paradise for nature lovers and offers the opportunity for you to see many rare plants and animals. The terrain is sand srub and therefore very dry despite the high rain fall. Sand scrub is also sometimes known as Florida desert. Look out for bob cats and deer.
Lake June in winter is on Floridas birding trail; do take your binoculas with you to see how many varieties you can spot.
This park is not staffed so your fee is on the honour system. There is no shop so it is important that you tale LOTS of water with you (particularly in the summer months)There are pic nic tables provided for your packed lunch.
If this park has not amused you for a whole day then an interesting side trip would be to go and see the Caladiums. An astonishing 95 per cent of these colourful plants are grown on Lake Placid. They came from the Amazon River Valley in South America. visit www. happinessfarms. com for more info
