The History of The Pirates of The Caribbean

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me. Who hasn’t sung along to this on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. This famous ride was first introduced at Disney land in California in the early sixties and became the most popular ride they had. After appearing in the “new” Walt Disney World, Orlando it soon became just as popular there too. So when Disney Land in Paris, first called Euro Disney, opened it as well, it’s fame really spread.

The next incarnation for this ride was in 2003, as the film The Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl. This film starred Johnny Depp and he became so well known for the film that the Disney imagineers put his likeness into the ride at Walt Disney World. You can see him as he pops up in all sorts of places trying to evade capture and finally admiring his loot of treasure at the end of the ride.

On the ride itself, as Disney have queuing down to a fine art, you will pass by all sorts of things relevant to pirates, the caves, the prisons, the barrels of grog and the sounds of pirates singing and laughing echo all around. Once you reach the boats you will drop fourteen feet over a waterfall into treasure filled caves. You will then pass between two ships firing canons at one another and drift out of the caves into the town where you can see the pirates pillaging, drinking and chasing wenches.

All three of the rides in all the locations is exactly the same and many of the scenes in the films are copies of the ride itself. It is fun to try and spot them when you watch the films.

Johnny Depp is said to have based the character of Jack Sparrow on the Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richard. So much was this in evidence in the film that in the sequel, Keith Richards appeared as Jack Sparrows wayward Father

This film was such a box office hit that The Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest was made very soon after in 2006 and was rapidly followed in 2007 by The Pirates of the Caribbean – At Worlds End. They are as we speak making the fourth movie – The Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides.

There is even a website now dedicated to The Pirates of the Caribbean at www. piratesonline. go. com. This is a game of the film and is written by the Disney Corporation.
