Sum of All Thrills - Epcot

Sum of All Thrills was opened in Epcot’s Innoventions East in 2009. It is situated near Electric Umbrella. Disney are expecting this to attract large crowds and long queues are expected for this quite innovative ride.

This attraction lets visitors allows custom design their own roller coaster, bobsled, or jet plane experience, then they are allowed to ride on it. I seem to remember the girls did a ride like this a few years ago at Disney Quest, I think it was called Cyber Space Mountain or something similar.

There is a large board with restrictions as you enter the ride. These include a minimum height requirement of 48 inches and visitors between 48 and 54 inches are not allowed to design rides that go upside down.

First you go into a briefing room and meet your hosts who provide instructions on how to design your thrill ride. They include in their briefing the importance of studying maths and science and stress how these courses will give you the tools you need to build things like skyscrapers, high-performance racecars, and video games.

After the briefing a cast member hands everyone a small plastic card and shows you to an electronic drafting board where your first task is to swipe your card. This will associate you and your design so the computer can recreate your ride once you have completed it.

You then select a language on the touch-sensitive screen and choose what type of thrill ride you want to design. Your options are Bobsled for a tame encounter, Roller Coaster for a mild ride, and Jet for the intense experience.

On your next screen you will find your track options. You will find loops, corkscrews, hills, dives, and slaloms all on the menu. You will need to select three track layouts. You have an electronic ruler and knob to design the intensity of the hills and the speed.

Once your design is complete, you give it a name, any name you choose, and then a cast member takes you to a second floor boarding area. Here you are asked to take every single item out of your pocket and put them in a free locker.

Then it is time to board. There are two seats and the cast member lowers a large apparatus over your head. At the same time they tell you where the emergency stop is located. They stress if at any time the ride becomes too intense you just press hard on the knob and the ride will immediately stop.

This ride certainly sounds a lot of fun I cannot wait for our next trip to Epcot.
