Fort Myers (2)
We love the gulf Coast and have spent many days at the beaches there sometimes just traveling there for a day trip or even staying one or two nights at a motel as these are relatively cheap. Check the room contents out first because if you are a family of 2 adults and 2 children you will probably only need one room as most of them contain two double or two queen beds. Do not forget you pay per room not per person. Look through the voucher/coupon books for discount vouchers as many offer these for “walk –ins”. It is fairly normal practice in Florida to ask to see the room before you book it.
You will find Fort Myers a lovely area although far enough away from Orlando to merit an overnight stay. It was a military installation in the Civil War but more famous for Thomas Edison having his winter home and laboratory there. Sometime later Henry Ford also moved here and built his first car dealership. Both their homes are now open to the public.
If you are visiting Fort Myers for the first time although you can stroll around on foot I recommend that you initially take one of their bus tours to familiarize yourself with the area and then you can plan what you want to see during your visit. You will be able to visit a variety of historic buildings and museums if you want to.
Fort Myers has often been called the “City of Palms” and when you visit there you will see why. Many of the streets are lined with royal and queen palms. We have queen palms around the pool in our villa and they are so graceful and relaxing when they sway silently in the breeze.
You can have a picnic or spend the afternoon in the park or if you prefer a round of golf, or a more adventurous sport, there is a lot to do in the lovely sunshine. Fort Myers has some lovely beaches so you can head to the beach and relax or if you want to rent a waverunner or a jet ski, rent a boat, go on a fishing charter or parasail.
If you are a sports fan and are there early in the year the city is also home to the spring training sessions of the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins.
If you are staying for more than a couple of days from Fort Myers you can visit several beaches and islands such as Sanibel Island, Estero (where Edison and Ford camped), Bonita Springs, Captiva Island, and a few other smaller islands accessible only by boat, to date we have only been to Sanibel and really enjoyed this.
If you have the time go to Fort Myers I think you will enjoy it.
