E.T Adventure
Have you every wondered what it would be like to ride a bicycle through the sky? At E.T. Adventure in Universal Studios you can give it a go!
The ride is based on the hugely successful Steven Spielberg film and is very, popular. Be prepared for very long queues when the park is very busy and for a 10 minute wait when the park is very quiet. Once you are inside the attraction building itself, the queuing area is set in a large forest. This is very effectively done, with tall redwood trees, dimmed light and the suggestion of mist in the air. The efficient air-conditioning adds to the atmosphere.
At the start of the experience Steven Spielberg himself gives a video presentation which introduces you to the adventure you are going to have. He explains that E.T.’s home planet, the Green Planet, is in trouble and that the planet is gradually turning an unhealthy shade of orange. He asks you to travel to the Green Planet, with E.T., to help to solve the problem, and to find some of his friends. After this introduction you go through to ‘passport control’ where a member of staff asks your name and gives you a card that you will need to allow you to continue on the mission.
The journey to Green Planet is taken on ‘bicycles’. I was slightly disappointed that there were no actual pedals to turn to make it fly, but apart from that the experience is very good. At this point you hand in the card you were given earlier and are directed to your transport. The bicycles seat up to 12 people each and hang from rails above, but the individual seats are like bicycle seats, there are handle bars and a basket on the front for E.T. to sit in.
Your adventure to the Green Planet begins and you fly off through the tall trees and up into the air, encountering all sorts of things on the way which have to be avoided. There is some swooping up and down, some sudden accelerating and a few turns but before long you arrive at the Green Planet. Your journey takes you round some of the Green Planet and you see the plants and some of E.T’s friends.
All too soon it is time to return to earth and E. T. waves you goodbye. If you listen carefully when he says goodbye, you might just recognise what he is saying.
Did you get to the Green Planet in time to save it, and all of E.T’s friends? I’m not telling you – you will have to try this delightful ride for yourself and find out.
