Especially for history buffs!
The Orange County Regional History Center is situated in East Central Boulevard in Orlando.
This museum started its' life as a singe kitchen exhibit for the Central Florida Centenniel celebration which took place in 1942. It was held in a single room in the old courthouse at the intersection of Magnolia and Central.
After the Centenniel was over, many local folk donated historical items and the exhibition grew like Topsy til it occupied not one, but several rooms.
In 1957 the collection was moved into storage for 6 years after which it reopened in the new courthouse annexe.
7 years later it moved into the Christ building and from there to Loch Haven Park
The circle was completeted in at the turn of this century when it moved back to its starting point.
So what will you find in this museum today? .
Well, on the balcony you will find artefacts that cover the life and times of the local area. There is also a Jack Kerouc display which includes original manuscripts annotated by Jack himself and photos of the great man taken for Life magazine.
Abstracts of Title covers the chain of ownership of many properties going all the way back to Pioneer times. Absolutely fascinating!
There are always temporary displays in this museum and as I speak there is both a Peanuts and Warner Bros travelling exhibit.
The Peanuts display mixes a little learning in with the fun as it features an interactive journey through the natural world. In the Warner Brothers section there are 160 original paintings and art objects that cover their cartoons through the 30s to the 60s.
This museum often holds special events and I have picked out to mention the lunch and lecture series. Take a packed lunch and $3 to cover the lecture and and you will be treated to a talk on some topic of local interest after which you can mingle and chat while you eat your lunch.
Right now they are featuring talks on Henry Plant and Wilds to Wonderland. We all think we know everything about Henry Plant; but do we really? I hazard a guess that this lecture will throw up at least a dozen things you did not know.
