Child safety
All information written is from the Florida Drivers Handbook
A topic close to all our hearts I am sure.
The law requires every driver to properly secure children Five years of age or younger in child restraint devices riding passenger in a car, van or pick up truck. Infant carriers or children's car seats must be used for children up to three years of age and younger. For children aged 4 through 5 years, a separate carrier, an integrated child seat or a seat belt may be used. All infant carriers must be approved by the US government type.
When getting your hire car check out with the company that they have the appropriate type for your use if you require a child restraint.
Recommendations;
Infant carriers Birth to 9 mths or 20 pounds.
Children's car seats - nine months to four years (20 - 50 pounds)
Lap Belt - Four years and older (over 40 pounds)
Lap Belt and shoulder belt - 55inches tall.
WHEN IT IS HOT OUTSIDE, DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED
A study has shown that with an outside temperature of 94 degrees the inside of a car could be 122 degrees in just 30 mins or 132 degrees in an hour.
Also if you go to Typhoon lagoon or such places remember to cover the little ones up. Because you might think they are in the shade under an umbrella but the reflection off umbrellas still causes babies to catch the sun. Don't forget the high factor sun cream, American Doctors take a dim view of irresponsible Parents.
Just be careful and everyone can enjoy without any adverse consequences
School Buses & Crossings
All information written is from the Florida Drivers Handbook
On a two way street or Highway, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a stopped school bus which is picking up or dropping off children - a sign will be extended from the bus. You must remain stopped until all children are clear of the roadway and the bus signal is withdrawn.
If the highway is subdivided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, you do not have to stop if you are moving in the opposite direction to the bus. Painted lines or pavement marking are not considered barriers. You must stop if you are moving in the same direction as the bus and you must continue until the bus stop signal is withdrawn.
Crossing guards are posted in areas when it is unsafe for children to cross alone. When you see a guard, reduce your speed. You are near a school and children are in the area. Watch for School Zone posted speed, stop if necessary at the marked stop line, never in the crosswalk. Obey signals from any cross guard.
It is the drivers responsibility to do everything possible to avoid colliding with pedestrians, remember children are unpredictable.
