A day out at Wekiwa.
Wekiva Springs State Park is situated in Apopka (exit 94 off the Interstate 4) in Seminole.
This park is plum in the middle of the head waters of the Wekiva River and has been variously occupied by the Timucan Indians, the tourist industry, the turpentine industry and a sports club. Nowadays, it is one of the best State Parks there is.
Here you can enjoy many outdoor activities in and on the water, hilking the trails or just relaxing and taking in the views.
Undoubtedly, the best way to view the park is by canoe or kayak. You can hire these from the park concession holder who will also provide a guided tour. Call 407 863 4311
You can buy a snack or drink from the concession holder and sometimes they lay on some hot dogs.
The shortest run is approximately one mile and takes an hour and the longest takes 8 hours and takes you all the way from Kings Landing to Buffalo Tram (inside Rock Springs)
There are also 6 other runs to choose from that take between the 1 and 8 hours already mentioned.
If you have not had a swim in a spring before you are in for a treat. The water is held at a natural 72 degrees all year round and it is crystal clear. You may snorkel in these waters. The changing rooms are located nearby so there is no need to change under an inadequate towel.
There are miles of trails to explore, some of which are open to horses and bikes. In all there are 13 miles of trail and they are classified as wilderness trails so take a compass and some water with you and maybe a mobile phone.
You may well spot a gopher tortoise, white deer or wild turkey; less common are Florida black bears and bald eagles. There are also 50 endangered plants here.
At the time of writing there is a ranger led programme every saturday morning at 10. a. m. Also on the first and third sundays of the month there is a wet to dry trail tour. This takes you through the hydric hammock and lasts half an hour.
This park sometimes reaches capacity so I recommend that you get there early on popular days
