Toy Story Mania
This ride opened as part of Disney’s “Year of a Million Dreams” in Orlando late May 2008 and also in California in mid June. We were lucky enough to ride on it when we went to our villa in Orlando at the beginning of June.
We decided to go straight to this ride when we entered the park and were lucky enough not to have to queue for too long. We really were lucky as the wait increased considerably as the day went on. I believe this is a Fastpass ride although as our wait was not long did not check this at the time.
The ride lasts about 5 minutes and there are no height restrictions.
This ride was inspired by the Disney-Pixar films " Toy Story" and " Toy Story II”. You have to put on your 3 D glasses to enter the 4 D world of Woody, Buzz and other favourite " Toy Story" characters to have a high scoring game which you will really enjoy.
Upon entering the attraction, you are welcomed by Mr. Potato Head, more than five feet tall and looking like he stepped right down from the movie screen. Mr Potato Head engages in a two-way conversation and encourages you to " step right up" for the ride.
We all got a front row seat put on our 3-D glasses, and then " shrunk" to the size of a toy. The carnival tram ride vehicles then took us on an exciting and colourful route through " Andy’ s Bedroom" filled with oversized murals and toys. Everyone pairs up to sit side by side for a friendly competition that with loads of targets and surprises.
As you play, you can actually see the " virtual" objects you have fired leave the shooters and hit (or miss in my case) the targets. With the 4-D special effects technology, you sense objects whirring past you as they seem to pop out of the 3-D scenes.
Your vehicle proceeds on to each of the targets and stops in front of each one to allow you to fire at them.
First comes the " Pie Throw Practice" round in which you try splattering targets with virtual pies.
Next, Hamm hosts a " Hamm & Eggs" booth in which you launch plastic virtual eggs at various barnyard targets.
Bo Peep’ s Baaa-loon Pop presents a landscape full of balloon sheep, trees and other objects at which you can fire virtual darts. Here you can get wet as a burst virtual water balloon might add an additional 4-D wet dimension to the game.
From there it’ s on to " Green Army Men Shoot Camp" where you have to try to break plates with virtual baseballs.
Next was Buzz Lightyear a ring toss game with Little Green Aliens as the targets.
In the final game we rode through Wild West scenes launching virtual suction-cup darts at targets in " Woody’ s Rootin’ Tootin’ Shootin’ Gallery. " We then had a final " Woody’ s Bonus Roundup" encouraging us to fire our shooters as rapidly as possible at one last super-target for extra points. I thought I had done really well until I found out that Grandad had beaten me once again by about 100, 000.
I found out afterwards that in each of the Toy Story Mania games, there is at least one " Easter Egg" , targets that can trigger the appearance of bonus high-value targets and other changes in the scene. This information I am keeping to myself until my visit to Toy Story Mania on my next holiday!
