The American Idol Experience
A trip to Hollywood Studios wouldn’t be complete without dragging the rest of the family in to watch one of The American Idol Experience shows. None of our family can sing very well, so it’s always good to watch and listen to others who can. There are three ‘acts’ to watch, who are members of the public who have already auditioned earlier that day and have been chosen to entertain the audience. The winner of that show progresses to the final at the end of the day, competing against the winners of the other shows that day. The winner of the final gets a “dream ticket” which entitles them to go to the front of the queue at any of the regional American Idol auditions for the TV show itself.
The main theatre where it all takes place is designed to look like the TV show’s stage. It is huge and the atmosphere is great. You can vote for the act that you like, using electronic key pads, once all three contestants have sung.
My family always have a little moan when I drag them along, but secretly they do enjoy it, honest! There are three judges and the format is similar to the actual show – in that you have one judge that is always the ‘baddy’ and is very critical of all the singers (and the audience are encouraged to boo), one that is very kind to all the contestants, finding something good to say, even when it is very difficult, and one judge who is into the technical and musicality side of the song.
The contestants choose a song to sing from a song list, and it must be one that has not already been sung that day, with pre-recorded music. Each singer is introduced and then has to sing for 90 seconds in front of the live audience. It must be very nerve-wracking for those on the stage, and the first singer was a bundle of nerves, but had a sweet voice. The second singer thought he had a good voice, but it was a bit flat. The third singer was very confident and sang well. It was great fun voting for the person we thought was the best, although our choice did not actually get the most votes. (we went for the nervous singer as they had the best voice).
We would definitely recommend going to at least one of the shows – we would have liked to stay to see the final, but we didn’t have the stamina to stay the whole day at Hollywood Studios.
