FASCINATING DISNEY FACTS
What would Orlando be without Disney? For most people it is the Disney magic that brings them to Florida in the first place, and ensures they return time after time. The parks themselves are absolutely amazing, but even more amazing are some of the facts which make Disney what it is.
Did you know that the beautiful and immaculate landscapes of the Parks contain over 7 million trees plants and flowers? You only have to walk round Epcot, for example, to see how much time and effort Disney put into maintaining it in pristine condition. Of course all this takes a lot of effort, and that includes mowing the 2, 000 acres of grass three times a week. All this adds up to 450, 000 miles that the mowers travel over a year, which would actually take them 18 times round the Equator.
One of the things which we found most remarkable on our first, and subsequent visits is the cleanliness of the place – including the many toilet areas which use 194, 871 miles of toilet paper and 24. 409 miles of paper towels, and nearly 730, 102 gallons of bleach.
Of course all those millions of visitors each year need feeding, and in order to keep the hunger pangs at bay, Disney uses 2. 9 million pounds of eggs, 639, 000 pounds of macaroni and cheese and 1. 2 million pounds of watermelon. Hungry visitors munch their way through 9 million pounds of French fries, annually, as well as 10 million hamburgers and 7 million hot dogs. They snack on 300, 000 pounds of popcorn and eat 319, 353 lbs of sugar and more than 1. 5 million soft pretzels! Those who enjoy healthy snacks devour 606, 000 pounds of bananas and 510, 000 pounds of grapes. All of this is washed down with more than 50 million soft drinks. It is mind boggling!
Disney owns the largest working wardrobe in the world, with over 1. 5 million garments in use. As well as this they have over 2 million costumes which are used in the various entertainment areas. Another staggering statistic is that if all the buttons which are used by the costuming team in one year were stacked up, the pile would be 96 times taller than the height of Cinderella’s castle!
Of course, in order to transport us from park to park, and from the hotels, Disney has to have a huge fleet of buses, numbering 263, which travel nearly 18 million miles a year. For those unfortunate guests who have an accident, Disney hand out 214, 000 bandages!
It is difficult to imagine how an organisation as large as Disney manages to ensure that the parks run so seamlessly, and efficiently, but they do. Day in, day out, their staff make sure that the parks are clean and tidy, and ready for the next influx of excited guests who arrive at their doors. They take recycling seriously, too, and recycled over 18, 300, 00 pounds of paper products in 2004.
However, the statistic that I find the most interesting and amusing has to be this one…. . each year they order $1. 7 million worms to feed the animals at Animal Kingdom. Now that really is staggering! I am certainly glad I don’t have to deal with them!
