Cocoa Beach
If you fancy a day, or even a weekend, at the beach and do not want to drive too far head for Cocoa Beach. This beach is only an hours drive from Orlando on the east coast which is more popularly known as the Space Coast. It is located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River lagoon
When we go we either get up early have breakfast at the villa and then enjoy a late lunch when we are there or just simply head for the coast and have breakfast along the way.
There is something for all the family at Cocoa and it is just minutes from Florida' s fastest growing port - Port Canaveral. Many visitors meet their boats here as this is the home to the Disney Cruise Line as well as Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
My parents are usually only too happy to stay on the beach which is six miles long and nearly one mile wide. From here they have seen a space launch or watched the many birds whilst dolphins can often be seen playing in the sea.
The sea is wonderful to swim in and if you fancy a quiet kayak exploration off the Banana River islands you can do this as well.
For those who like fishing there is plenty of choice. From Port Canaveral you can go on full or half-day charters where mahi-mahi, wahoo, cobia, sailfish, king mackerel, tarpon and snook can be caught. There are many different fishing companies that provide this service.
Whilst you are there go to Cocoa Beach Pier it has a good selection of restaurants, boutiques, and gift shops. Fishing is allowed on the pier and rentals are available.
Ron Jons is the world' s largest surf shop, and has everything you need for fun in the sun. If you go here allow at least a couple of hours to look around.
Of course you are near the famous Kennedy Space Centre. In times gone by we have left our parents on the beach whilst we have taken the girls for half a day to Kennedy!
You can tour Kennedy Space Center during which you see Imax space films and look at all of the exhibits and shows, including the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame which really is a must see. Each ticket is valid for two days so if you are having an overnight stay this is really good value.
Golfers can play a round of golf at the 27 holes golf course and there are plenty of miniature golf courses for the whole family to enjoy.
If you have the time and the energy I do recommend a trip to Cocoa Beach.
