…………and following on from our first article, listing ten of the “Top Things to do in Orlando for Free”, here are the final five.
Lake Eola Park
Situated in Downtown Orlando Lake Eola Park is a popular destination for families. Feed the ducks or take a gondola cruise on the lake. Very often there are special events held in the park and live music at the Walt Disney Amphitheatre. The park covers forty-three acres with the lake filling over half of the area. A jogging trail and kids playground are also provided.
Fort Christmas Historical Park
Located roughly twenty miles east of Orlando in the town of Christmas is a replica of Fort Christmas. The original Fort Christmas was actually built in 1837 but rotted away a long time ago. Make sure you visit the Visitor Centre where pamphlets are available which explain all the exhibits in detail, and also provide a short insight into the Seminole Wars. Video presentations are also available for the visitor the view. The Visitor Centre is built in the fashion of a Floridian cowboy farmhouse, called a “Cracker”. There are many activities and sports to be enjoyed at Fort Christmas including tennis, volleyball and basketball. Don’t forget to take along a picnic, as there are numerous picnic tables and barbecues available.
Leu Gardens
If you have an interest in plants and gardening a visit to Harry P Leu Gardens could perhaps be on your itinerary for your next trip to Orlando. However, free admission is only available on Mondays between the hours of 9am and noon. The normal admission price is $5 and $1 for children. Wander along the nature trails and through the lovely gardens. Informative labels naming the plants are very useful should you find a plant that you would like to plant in your own garden. Tours of the Leu House Museum take place daily at 10 am and 3. 30 pm, although unfortunately not during the month of July. Leu Gardens is situated north of downtown Orlando.
Sanford Museum
Sanford Museum is located to the north of Orlando and follows the history of central Florida and also the life of Sanford’s founder Henry S Sanford. The museum was built as a memorial to Henry Sanford and exhibits include his library and manuscript collection and also his art collection. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday 11am to 4pm and on Saturdays 1pm to 4pm.
Celebration
We love to visit the quaint community of Celebration during our visits to Orlando. Take a stroll around the lake, sit in the rocking chairs watching the locals fishing, you might even see a couple of turtles or even small alligators. Charming little shops and an abundance of restaurants overlook the lake. Visit at Halloween and view the decorated houses, or at Christmas when each evening children can play in the artificial snow!
