Celebrating Christmas in Florida Part 3 – The Christmas Tree
One of the most traditional aspects of Christmas is the Christmas tree, and we did wonder when we first visited our beautiful home at Christmas what we would find, and whether this most important symbol of the festive season would be obtainable.
We needn’t have worried and we were delighted to find that trees were readily available – even some real ones – and many had integrated lights to make them simplicity itself when decorating. As for decorations, who could resist going to the Disney shop in Downtown Disney where all year round all manner of beautiful and Disney themed tree ornaments are on offer? I can spend many happy hours peering at all the beautiful ornaments – from Cinderella to Tinkerbell, from Winnie the Pooh to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. We always try to buy one special Disney ornament for our tree and we have begun a very special collection which is full of wonderful memories of our Christmases in the sunshine.
One thing we have noticed is that American Christmas trees tend to be taller and bigger than their British counterparts, mainly due to the fact that many American houses have huge rooms with vaulted cathedral ceilings, and some of our tiny trees would be completely lost within these spaces. Ornaments also tend to be larger in order to complement the increased size of the trees.
We have bought a beautiful tree for our own home, and we always try to visit our home just before Christmas in order to prepare the house for our delighted Christmas guests. We have a huge selection of ornaments for the tree and when we decorate the tree we always try to leave some for the excited family to complete the tree decoration themselves.
One thing which is easy to find in Orlando is a tree skirt – a colourful circle of material, often velvet or fur, which is spread round the base of the tree to hide its legs. It is a great idea and one which I have never seen in the UK. Ours is red velvet with fur around the outside.
We always feel excited as we stand back to survey our handiwork and to imagine how our guests will feel when they first walk into our home ready for their very special Christmas holiday.
