Yabi Japanese Steakhouse
If you are a new visitor to the Disney area then this place probably isn’t going to be at the top of your places to eat list. There are so many different restaurants close to the tourist areas of H192 and International drive for you to try that it would be silly to recommend that you travel around 20 miles just to sample something a little bit different. However if you are an Orlando veteran and are looking for more of a dining experience than merely somewhere to grab a bite then this could be right up your street.
The Yabi Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is a Hibachi style restaurant situated just outside Winter Garden in a small strip mall along side an Irish Bar, Caribbean Bakery and New York style pizza place as well as a few other small shops. You can reach it by heading north from H192 along either H429 (toll road)or for the more scenic route Avalon Road. The trip will take you around 30 minutes but it’s worth the drive.
We went as part of a group of 7 friends and had a great evening. The restaurant offers a good varied menu but we all opted to go for a selection of sushi followed by various set hibachi dinners. The prices vary from $8. 95 for the veggie dinner to $27. 95 for the lobster tail dinner there are also a large number of combination dishes priced in between. I opted for the shrimp and scallop dinner at $17. 95 and hubby went for the steak and chicken dinner at $16. 95. All the hibachi dinners come with a starter of Japanese onion soup (a clear broth flavoured with spring onions), house salad with special dressing (lots of ginger, very tasty), fried rice, noodles and vegetables. We all shared the salmon sashimi appetiser at $8. 95, Tuna sashimi appetiser at $9. 95 and sushi appetiser at $5. 95 although you could get away without a starter as the portion sizes for the set dinner are typically American.
We were seated around a central hot plate where the chef prepared our food and entertained us with his knife and egg juggling as well as his fire act! You are offered the chance to eat with chopsticks but we opted for forks, some members of our group were more adventurous and added to the entertainment with shrimp and steak juggling! ! The tables seat up to 8 and smaller groups will be sat with other parties but they don’t keep you waiting too long and will start with a half full table. There were children in the restaurant and they seemed to be well catered for with the children’s hibachi dinner at $5. 95-$6. 95 and they were definitely kept amused. The food was good and it was certainly an experience I would repeat on future visits. The cost with drinks and tip worked about around $30 a head which I though was very reasonable.
We went mid week and the restaurant was fairly busy with just one empty table after we were seated so although reservations aren’t required it may be worth calling ahead especially at the weekends. They open for dinner every evening from 4pm -9. 30pm (we left much later than this so I assume that is the latest they will start to cook) and every lunch time except Saturday.
