Wolf Gang Pucks at DownTown Disney
This is our review of Wolf Gang Puck restaurant in Downtown Disney May 2007
On entering the restaurant you are asked whether you wish to eat downstairs with all the peasants or upstairs with silver service.
Naturally being stupid and apparently having too many dollars in my wallet we opted for upstairs. Also it would seem that it was the only restaurant in Downtown Disney that didn’t have a waiting list; this is because it is expensive as we were about to find out ?
There was a reasonable wine list and I selected a Chardonnay which I think the waiter, his helper and his helper’s helper went off to locate.
Everything felt a bit pretentious and surreal about WolfGang’s, it is obviously trying to offer something different than the average restaurant and yet I don’t think it achieves what it sets out to do.
I noticed many staff milling about or “busy doing nothing” as I call it – think I’ll try and get a job here!
Anyway the ambience and location are great with a lovely view over the lake and a very formal but well thought out layout of tables.
I as usual order the New York strip while my wife opts for the beef goulash.
Both arrived promptly and also were very good. Though the steak pales next to Charlie’s and the now legendary Manny’s! ?
Real mash potato was excellent as opposed to the usual packet mash we seem to get served, and the onion rings were not the frozen rubbish but homemade rings of onion delight – I rate the onion rings 10 out of 10!
Being in such an upmarket atmosphere did not stop either of us from scoffing down our dinners; I hope no one was watching! !
As per usual we were too stuffed to have dessert, so we just opt for two coffees.
The bill including wine was US$120 which we felt was overpriced for the meal and perhaps we were paying for the mountains of staff and the over the top approach the whole restaurant had. It wasn’t bad; it just felt too “false” for reasonable food at a high cost. Such a recognised establishment would have a fundamental basic correct such as how to pour the wine, and yet the waitress failed to do this correctly which was surprising.
Would I go again? , I guess so but maybe only for a special occasion or to impress the girlfriend, though my wife may have objections to that….
