Dining where the locals eat
We have been to Orlando many times and have in the past done the tourist thing and eaten at many of the popular and well known eateries on the 192, places like TGI’s and the Olive Garden etc
This trip we had decided that we would do something different and try out some of the less well known place to eat, we were looking for places where the locals eat because if the locals eat there it’s got to be one of two things or maybe even both.
They have to be cheap and offer good food in reasonable sized portions, yes I hear you all say the portion sizes in Florida are good anyhow when compared to the UK!!! Yes, I have to agree with you but over the last 10 years that we have been going to Orlando the portions have got smaller in some of the tourist restaurants, well that’s my view or maybe I just eat more nowadays !!!
Shirley (the wife) spends lots of time on the Florida forums discussing this and that and she had compiled a list of places to eat that were not normally tourist eateries and first on the list was Randy’s which is just down the 27 from Orange Tree where we were staying in our villa.
We arrived in just a few minutes from the villa and were greeted by a single, friendly member of staff, the place was just like you would expect as a typical US diner, we sat in a booth and scanned the menu
They had a number of local draft beers on the menu all of which were lovely and cold, Shirley chose Fried chicken and I chose a Steak as they had a number of steaks on the menu.
Although the menu was a little limited the food was good, the steak was cooked perfectly and I have to say I was a little jealous of Shirley’s fried chicken as it looked delicious! A taste of it confirmed it was lovely not at all like the Kentucky Fried Chicken over here in the UK.
Just to prove that this truly was a local eatery within a few minutes of us arriving 2 locals Sheriffs police cars pulled up in the car park and in walked 3 police officers who were on a dinner break, it was quite a sight to be eating on the next table to police officers in uniform and holstering the weapons etc. We made sure we behaved ourselves and didn’t drop any crumbs !!!
A few other local people came in throughout the evening all sitting at the bar drinking and watching the baseball on the big TV, Randy’s truly is a where the locals eat and drink, and we had a good meal at a good price.
