What to do in Mount Dora
If shopping in the quaint tree-lined streets of Mount Dora isn’t your thing or you are not into drinking coffee at a pavement cafe while watching the world go by, then there are many more attractions on offer to tempt you.
Firstly there is the Inland Lakes Railway, which offers a one hour fifteen minute train ride between Mount Dora and the pleasant Wooton Park in Tavares to the west. Pulled by Herbie a 45 ton locomotive, the stainless steel carriages make for a relaxing and fun trip. The train’s conductor gives an informative account of the history of the railroad and points out places of interest along the way. The first part of the journey skirts the scenic Lake Dora before heading inland parallel to Old Highway 441 and onward into Tavares. Don’t miss the train being turned on the century old turntable.
Then, down by the lakeside you will find a number of companies offering a variety of boat trips including lunch cruises, sunset tours and eco adventures. We chose a two-hour Eco-Tour on board the Captain Doolittle, which took us across Lake Dora and into the Dora Canal at Tavares, which has been described as “the most beautiful mile of water in the world”. Our captain for the day kept us well informed and we experienced the delights of a variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. We saw turtles, alligators and otters in their own habitats as well as old cypress trees laden with Spanish moss and numerous species of birds.
Back on dry land Segway of Central Florida offer a one-hour tour, which takes in the city marina, Mount Dora lighthouse and Palm Island Park. From the Park the tour continues along the raised boardwalks by the lake providing an opportunity for riders to observe the abundance of wildlife in the area.
For the more adventurous Rohr Balloons provide hot air balloon rides over Lake Dora and the surrounding countryside, whilst Adventure Cove is home to an eighteen hole golf course, miniature golf, a games room and video arcade all set in a tropical theme.
These are just a few examples of what is available in Mount Dora. Each time we visit there always seems to be something new going on. Our advice is to stop by the information center located in the Chamber of Commerce building to get an up to date calendar of events.
We can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
