Visiting Florida with Disabilities
When visiting Florida the disabled do seem to be looked after, whether it is mobility, or visual disabilities help is available in all the parks.
In every show there is a separate area for disabled people, and their friend/family and carers
In Disney wheelchairs are available to rent on a first come first served basis, but you can either bring your own, or a rental wheelchair that can be hired here in Kissimmee. Two of the company’s that our guests have used are Walker mobility and Randys mobility. I understand that both company’s deliver for free.
If you hire a wheelchair at one of the Disney parks you will not be allowed to take it to another park on the same day but they do say if you keep your ticket you can get another chair at the next park, (not sure how they think you can get to the next park though)
If you go to the guest relations at Magic Kingdom and ask for a guest assistance pass card and they see you need one they will issue you with a card, you then are able to get easier access to rides and attractions. I had a replacement knee and was in the guest relation office to just ask about a certain parade and the lady behind the counter asked me what I had done (I was on crutches) when I said I had just had knee surgery she suggested to me that I should have this guest assistance card and sure enough as I approached a ride and showed the card I was either taken a back way or taken on an elevator so I did not have to stand for long.
On almost all attractions there are special cars available for wheelchair passengers and their family’s
For Guests with visual difficulties Disney have available for ($25 refundable deposit) a Braille Guide
They also have an audio Guide again a $25 refundable deposit is required, but it does give a sense of direction and some information about various attractions.
Disney also have an Audio hand held device which provides narration and info at certain attractions.
All these things are available at guest relations.
I have to say whilst I was on crutches and also with a friend in a wheelchair I have found people in Florida to be more than helpful towards people with difficulties.
