Florida Guide > Places to Visit
Vero Beach
The first year we went to Florida we stayed for one week at Palm Beach. Whilst there we went to the Vero Beach area for the day as it was not too far away. My parents were quite tired this day so they decided just to stay on the beach whilst we explored. Apparently they had an afternoon stroll and were amazed at the size of the “mansions” along the beach.
Some of our party were keen to kayak so we went to Adventure Kayaking of Vero Beach which is owned and operated by a guy who grew up at Vero Beach. Adventure Kayaking has year-round, full-service kayak tours throughout Florida, including the Everglades, and the Bahamas. However apparently some of the best flat-water kayaking in the world is found in and around Vero Beach on the Indian River Lagoon.
Marsh airboat tours are educational as well as being a fun airboat ride. Captain Kenny gears his tours to the age group he has on the tour and he makes sure everyone has their life jackets on before the tour starts. There were two very young children on our tour and he was really patient explaining everything to them. We had a great time seeing alligators and loads of different species of birds in their natural environment.
A visit to the Mclarty Treasure Museum will only take an hour. It is worth watching the movie because it helps you better understand what you will see in the museum. We found the volunteers staffing the museum were friendly and helpful. Be sure not to miss the boardwalk out to the observation area where you will get a fantastic view of the area where the wrecks and subsequent ' survivors camp' would have been. Great value with a $2 entrance fee although you are likely to want to buy a metal detector after your visit!
We are sports enthusiast and were told when you visit Vero Beach we must go to Dodgertown’s Holman Stadium which at the time was the spring training venue for the Los Angeles Dodgers and we were so pleased that we went. It was a great experience and we had been told that no other Spring Training ballpark brings you as close to the players as this one and they make autograph hunters very welcome. We found this be very true.
Finally we ended our day with a boat trip to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge which is a trip I will never forget and strongly recommend if you are in the Vero Beach area.
