US Gas/Petrol stations and filling your car
Generally when you collect your car from your nominated car rental company – book through the car rental section of Orlando Villas for the very best deals, you will drive away with a full tank of petrol/gas.
The American ‘gallon’ is 0. 83 of an Imperial Gallon – only 16 fl oz to the pint – therefore you may find that you are running lower in fuel within a few days whereby in the UK a full tank for your size car would last longer.
Gas stations are similar to UK petrol station although the pumps do have a few differences. Diesel is not available at every gas station so the likelihood of you filling with the wrong fuel is almost eradicated.
Most gas stations have pumps where you pre-pay. This can cause a problem as the pumps now require a Zip Code/Post Code relating to the address of the cardholder. Should you wish to pay by UK credit card the alternative is for a member of your party to go into the cash area, present the card with the pump number and state the $ value that is required. Should your vehicle take less than the amount requested a refund will be given. Make sure you ask for receipts if paying with credit cards especially if a refund is due and given.
Paying by cash is operated in much the same way.
One way to save some money is to purchase a Gift Card from Wal Mart, put some dollars on it and then use it, just like a debit card, at the pumps at Wal Marts; there is a saving of 3c a gallon. The cards cannot be used at gas pumps at a Sam’s Club location unless you are already a member of Sam’s Club.
Some pumps, but they tend now to be few and far between, have a lever that has to be lifted in order for the pump to operate. If you come across one of these pumps it will be clearly marked with pictures to show the required operation.
Gas prices in the US vary immensely, even from one garage to another on the opposite side of a road.
Published gas prices include tax, this being unusual where US prices are concerned; it is one of the anomalies of their pricing structure.
Cars we have rented in Florida have not had lockable fuel caps, I cannot say whether this is 100% through all cars.
