Universal Studios - New York (3)
If ever you have visited New York or perhaps even just dreamed of doing so you are sure to enjoy a few hours in New York at Universal. Here you will see replicas of The Palace Theatre, NY Library and other famous Big Apple landmarks.
If you are lucky and you time your vacation visit right, you may even get to experience the Delancey Street Italian Festival, Mardi Gras, or the Macy's Holiday Parade. You will need to visit their website to check the dates of these.
New York is the home to one of the Universals most popular attractions, Revenge of the Mummy- The Ride. This is billed as a psychological thrill ride. Your quest is to stop the Mummy's Curse on this indoor roller coaster. You will face fireballs, scarab beetles and warrior mummies. The queue area has some interesting interactive items, but the ride is not nearly as scary as you would think. Single rider line is available, this is great if you decide to go on separately. This is also a Universal Express Attraction.
Be sure to check the times of the The Blues Brothers when you enter the Studios. This is really a not to be missed street show that takes place outside of Finnegan's Irish Bar & Grill on the famous Delancey Street. Party with Jake and Elwood and friends. We often go to two shows, as the songs will vary from show to show.
On our last visit we decided to have lunch after one of the Blues Brothers shows and as we were outside Finnegan’s Irish Bar, where there is a full-service restaurant for lunch or dinner, we ate there. I believe there is also a daily Happy Hour as well as on going entertainment in the lounge.
As we had had an early start and little breakfast we opted for starters. The girls and I had Reilly's Chicken Wings which were deep fried chicken wings in a spicy buffalo sauce and served with veggie sticks and bleu cheese dressing and were delicious.
My parents had Finnegan's Potato and Onion Webb, which was rightly described as mountain of thinly, sliced potatoes and onions, these dipped in beer batter and served with malt vinegar.
The girls then shared Irish Times Fish 'N Chips – which was cod fried in ale batter with wedge fries and served up on the front page of the Irish Times with a bottle of malt vinegar and tartar sauce. They are too young to remember having fish n chips served in newspaper so thought this was great!
Mother had Country Cork Corned Beef and Cabbage, corned beef served with red bliss potatoes and root cellar vegetables and said it was nearly as good as the home- made version she was used to
Dad and I enjoyed Guinness Beef Stew - Country fare stew filled with beef, carrots and pearl onions in a Guinness-infused gravy surrounding a stack of mashed potatoes, we could hardly move afterwards!
We decided to have a gentle stroll around the shops after lunch and first visited Delancey Street Psychic Shop where I had a henna tattoo. We declined a Reading but bought some incense. They also have a good selection of jewellery.
Then onto Sahara Traders where you can find Revenge of the Mummy clothes and souvenirs as well as recreated Egyptian artefacts.
Before going on to Twister we browsed around Aftermath where they sell a collection of Twister souvenirs.
Finally we all went to Twister. This special effects theatre attraction is based on the mega-hit movie. After seeing the intro film featuring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton discussing the danger of tornadoes, you will be taken inside Aunt Meg's tornado-damaged home as part of the pre-show. Next you'll enter the main theatre, where you will be in a recreation of the drive-in theatre from the movie. Although things start out calmly, they change quickly as the tornado approaches. We all really enjoyed this ride and it is on our “Must Do” list for our next visit.
Enjoy New York, we did.
