Those little essentials
For those of you who are either new to central Florida or unfamiliar with the area around the US192 / US27 corridor this article seeks to give a brief overview of what is available in terms of “those little essentials”.
Villa development is booming in central Florida and in general terms communities are liberally scattered along the US27, most just south of the US192 but newer developments are now becoming a feature to the north of the intersection.
No surprise then that Wal-Mart should open a new store on the US27 at the Cagan Crossing intersection, just half a mile north from the US192.
Not, perhaps the biggest around, but it is open 24/7 and has an excellent selection of food and drink, comparable with most other supermarkets, and the deli specialities include barbecued chicken and key lime pie. Other than food the shelves are stacked with an abundance of household goods, electrical equipment, clothes and outdoor furniture. There are also dedicated areas for tires and car accessories as well as a comprehensive garden center. The store has a nail and beauty franchise, and an ATM is available for that extra bit of cash, should you need it.
As a good alternative to Wal-Mart, one intersection north on the US27, is a small retail park boasting a Winn-Dixie supermarket offering a more intimate grocery shop, but still with an excellent choice of fresh produce, frozen food, beers, wines and spirits. There is also a Unites States Post Office ideal for sending those holiday postcards; it also offers a photocopying service (at 25 cents a sheet) and next day parcel delivery.
On the same site, for those small emergencies, you will find a walk-in clinic open between noon and 10 pm every day, which ordinarily caters for cuts, bruises and sprains but is also well equipped to perform minor surgery. A dentist, an optician and a chiropractor are all close by.
For prescription drugs and general first aid supplies and medications both Walgreens and CVS are represented one junction further north.
Back on the US192 heading east towards Disney the first ramp left will bring to a Publix supermarket. These are well represented in Central Florida and offer good value for money.
If it’s fresh produce you are after, then look out for the several fruit and vegetable stalls along the side of highway US27 between the US192 intersection and Orange Tree, two miles to the north.
