The Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is located in East Fowler Avenue in North Tampa. Tampa is on Florida' s Gulf Coast.

As well as being the largest science center in America you can also enjoy a planetarium a butterfly garden a 3. D. theatre and the Dome theatre that shows feature length films.

One of the most exciting exhibits is the cycle ride; not too exciting you may think but here you are 30 feet in the air! This is perfectly safe as it relies on a counter balancing system but for the faint hearted, there is a safety net right underneath you.

In the butterfly house the butterflies are free flying and feature species from west/central Florida. There is also a lab where you can study the life cycle of a butterfly from egg to maturity. There are outside gardens in this area to provide a welcome blast of fresh air. Did you know that a butterfy has its taste buds on its feet? well neither did I but I do now.

When you visit the Exhibition of the Human Body you learn how a human proceeds from conception to puberty. The emphasis here is how to keep that precious body healthy. This is a good message in the fast food culture that currently prevails.

In Disasterville you can experience some extreme weather conditions; these include wild fires. tornados and hurricanes. This exhibit covers 10, 000 square feet.

There is a truly impressive model of the dinosaur known as diplodicus here. These weighed in at an impressive 40 tons and an even more awesome 150 feet. One interesting fact is that despite their massive size, their brains were the size of a walnut.

The Saunders Planetarium recreates the night sky in any era from the past, present day and the future. They have an impressive chronos projection system which gives remarkable viewing. Most days there is a choice of 3 or 4 presentations to choose from.

In the IMAX theatre there is a selection of feature length films showing. As I write you can choose from Avatar Flight Pilot and Ultimate wave- Tahiti.

Also available at a small extra charge is a Max flight simulator; since this only costs $5 you simply cannot leave this out.

This museum is open on week days from 9. a. m. to 5. p. m. and weekends from 9. a. m. to 6 p. m. and never closes.
