Florida Guide > Owners Vacation Diary
The first time we holidayed in Florida.
The first time we went to Disney was in 1979 and it was to California. We were having an adult holiday and our friends wanted to go so slightly reluctantly we went along.
Well, of course, we were captivated and could not wait to go back. We determined that next time it would be to Disneyworld in Florida.
A couple of years later my mother died and left me a small bequest and after a family chat we decided that we would have a once in a lifetime holiday in Florida.
So we booked a 2 week package that included flights, 1 week at a ranch and 1 week in Orlando.
Before we went, we received the disappointing news that since few people had booked the ranch element of the holiday that was cancelled and they booked us into a Miami motel instead.
So we boarded our plane to Miami (no M. C. O. then)
and arrived with 2 weary children to check into our room in the dark. In the morning, we had a pleasant surprise as this unprepssessing motel had a wonderful location right on the beach.
So we spent a very nice week trying out all the local restaurants, swimming and walking the beach.
At the end of the first week we were transported by coach to a hotel in the thick of things and tried to get 2 excited children to sleep.
In the morning we had a hasty breakfast and took the hotel shuttle to The Magic Kingdom. The first pleasant surprise was that in the 2 years that had elapsed since our first visit to California that your entrance ticket included all the shows and rides. . . much better, we thought.
Then of course that little bit of magic that is the boat ride to the entrance ogf Magic Kingdom.
Well, the kids loved it and we enjoyed watching the kids love it.
The major rides were Pirates of The Caribbean, The Black Hole and Small World and queues were 2 hours long! Nevertheless, we rode everything else twice.
The next day we went to Wet and Wild. Now, I know that you all prefer the Disney water parks and Aquatica these days but in those times there was only Wet and Wild.
A great day was had by all and we took our sore shoulders back to the hotel to grab some dinner which was swiftly followed by bed for all 4 of us.
Day 3 saw us go to Sea World and again we were enchanted with the shows and wandered round happily all day. Finale, of course, was the Shamu Show.
It is hard to believe today when you consider the plethora of things to do in the area that these 3 parks were it!
So the next day it was back to Magic Kingdom to do all the same rides again, see all the same shows again and eat a frozen banana again.
We did not mind a bit; after all, we would probably not ever come again! Since we are now close to our 30th visit that did not turn out to have the ring of truth.
The last 2 days we repeated Wet and Wild and Seaworld again and then it was time to pack for the final time and wave goodbye to Florida.
But, of course it was not our last visit and the next time we did the sensible thing and made our own package.
3 weeks this time and a whole house instead of a shared hotel room. Joy of joys. We have never looked back since then and apart from the odd night, have never booked a hotel again.
